The Color of Justice does a demographic breakdown of 1990, 2000, and a predicted 2050. Their breakdown follows as such White 85.9%,83.9%, and 74.9 prediction for 2050. African American 11.8%,12.3, and 15.4 predicted. Hispanic 6.4%,9.0, and 24.5 predicted. This comes without a surprise but white Americans are leading with more than four times the amount of African Americans and Hispanics. This is where our Justice system begins to look suspicious. While White Americans account for majority of our population, African Americans take up a vastly larger proportion of individuals in public and private facilities. A study done and recounted in The Color of Justice created graphs to help shed a light on Court Cases and sentences based on race. An example being 61% of Black court cases being found guilty and receiving harsh sentences versus 49.3 White cases for the same crimes. Here you can see by looking at data that there definitely appears to be a correlation in race and treatment in our justice system.
Using information received from The Bureau of Justice Statistics, they uncovered that out of 1000 households 200 White households would be victimized. This pales in comparison to the 350 Black households who are victimized. This all is still congruent with the population statistic from earlier. Statistically if the population of White Americans are so high versus the lower African American population, how can it be possible that more African Americans are being victimized and sentenced within our justice system? The US justice system has been criticized before that there is a bias in terms of race. This bias and discrimination against African Americans has made it dangerous to be Black in our society.
